Once the base pattern and sample are approved, Final Row can prepare the style for production through size grading, marker preparation, and cutting.
These steps are critical to maintaining consistent fit and measurements across the full size range while using production fabric efficiently.
Grading and cutting can be provided as part of a Final Row production project or, depending on the project, as individual development services.
SIZE GRADING
Size grading expands an approved base pattern into the additional sizes required for production.
The objective is not simply to make each pattern larger or smaller. Proportions, balance, ease, and key garment measurements must remain consistent as the style moves through the size range.
Depending on the garment, grading may include adjustments to:
- Chest and body width
- Shoulder width
- Sleeve length and width
- Waist and hip
- Rise and inseam
- Garment length
- Armhole and neckline
- Ease and overall proportion
Grading is performed after the base pattern and sample have been approved.
GRADING PRICING
Grading pricing depends on the garment type, pattern complexity, and number of sizes required.
Because every size range is different, grading is quoted individually after we review the approved base pattern and requested production sizes.
We confirm the grading cost before work begins.
MARKER PREPARATION
Once the graded patterns and production quantities are confirmed, a marker can be prepared for cutting.
Marker planning determines how the pattern pieces are arranged on the fabric and helps reduce unnecessary fabric waste while maintaining the required grain direction and cutting specifications.
Marker requirements may vary depending on fabric width, size breakdown, garment construction, print direction, nap, and other material characteristics.
PRODUCTION CUTTING
Final Row provides professional cutting for approved production styles through our New York studio.
Before cutting begins, we confirm the final pattern, size breakdown, fabric, quantities, and relevant production specifications.
Our cutting process considers:
- Approved production patterns
- Size and quantity breakdown
- Fabric width
- Grain direction
- Print or stripe matching requirements
- Nap and fabric direction
- Layering and spreading requirements
- Construction allowances
Accurate cutting creates the foundation for consistent sewing and finished garment measurements during production.
BEFORE CUTTING BEGINS
Production cutting should only begin once the garment is fully approved.
We typically confirm:
- Final approved sample
- Final production pattern
- Graded size range
- Production quantities
- Fabric approval
- Fabric width and usable yardage
- Special cutting requirements
If there is an issue with the pattern, fabric, size breakdown, or production information, we will address it before cutting whenever possible.

Because pattern making, sample development, grading, marker preparation, cutting, sewing, and production can all be coordinated through Final Row, the approved garment can move through the production process without requiring the client to manage multiple vendors separately.
